Broos to cut big names on Monday

Posted on November 30, 2025

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos is set to announce his Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad on Monday.

Last week, the Belgian coach named his preliminary squad for the tournament, which is expected to be trimmed down to at least 23 players.

Broos did warn that his decision would disappoint many players, given the significant growth of his selection pool over the past 24 months. During that time, Bafana qualified for AFCON and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Bafana Bafana’s 2025 AFCON squad will mostly have players from Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates as was the case in the previous matches. The formula has worked for Broos and is likely that he will stick with accomplished players.

“Trust the process!! The final Bafana Bafana squad for this year’s Africa Cup of Nations will be announced on Monday, 1 December 2025 at 12h00,” Bafana tweeted on Saturday.

Which players will likely miss the Bafana’s AFCON squad?

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala played in one of the qualifiers; however, he is one of the big names likely to miss out.

Another star player likely to be left out is Patrick Maswanganyi. Tito has not done enough to earn a ticket to Morocco and will likely be on standby.

One of the Bafana players who will almost certainly miss the AFCON squad is Elias Mokwana. The former Sekhukhune United winger was instrumental during the 2023 AFCON but hasn’t been part of Broos’ plans this year.

With Oswin Appollis, Tshepang Moremi impressing, it looks more likely that Mokwana will miss the 2025 edition.

The likes of Sipho Mbule, Rownwen Williams, Khuliso Mudau and Teboho Mokwena will be the first names to be on the Bafana’s AFCON squad. There might be a surprise or two but the core of the team will have Pirates and Downs players.

Who should make the AFCON squad?
