Broos – I Have To Give Myself Flowers

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos acknowledged his own contribution this week after guiding South Africa to a successful 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification.

Broos made his comments immediately after his side’s convincing 3-0 victory over Rwanda in their final qualifying match at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday evening.

For a moment, Bafana’s World Cup qualification was out of their hands, following a three-point deduction and a disappointing draw against Zimbabwe last week.

Broos claims that when almost everyone else lost hope, he successfully kept the belief alive within the squad, convincing the players that qualification was still possible.

“I have to give myself flowers because I had to get them believe that it’s possible [to qualify for the World Cup],” said Broos.

“And I think I succeeded in doing that but you need a group to do that. I can talk and shout and do whatever, if they are not ready to do it, everything stops.

“This is the good work we’ve had amongst each other. We trust each other, we have confidence in each other.

“So, it’s fantastic, I’ve said it before that if you have a group like that, you can only be proud. For everybody, but certainly for these guys, I’m happy that we succeeded.”
