Broos feels Pirates youngster needs a challenge

Posted on October 3, 2025

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has tipped Orlando Pirates Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s youngster to leave for Europe next season.

The 20-year-old defender has been one of the club’s best players this season, having featured in all seven league matches so far. The former SA U/20 centre-back made his professional debut earlier this year but has quickly established himself not only at Pirates but also at Bafana Bafana.

Broos feels the Pirates superstar has nothing to prove anymore in the PSL and should move to bigger leagues in Europe.

“If you see the quality and the talent of Mbokazi, I’m very sorry to Pirates but this guy has to go away next year,” Broos said on SABC Sport.

“He will become better when he plays good competition and in a higher level. If he stays here, it will become too easy for him because he’s good.

“He needs another motivation, another challenge. That makes him to become better.”

Broos wants Pirates to sell Mbokazi to Europe

Mbokazi was featured during Bafana’s recent World Cup qualifiers matches against Lesotho and Nigeria. Playing against the Super Eagles, the young centre-back pocketed reigning Africa Player of the Year Ademola Lookman as Bafana and Nigeria played to a 1-1 draw.

Mbokazi has caught the eye of a few European teams and with the Africa Cup of Nations around the corner, it is looking likely that the young defender won’t stay in South Africa for long.

Which league should Mbokazi join if he decides to leave SA?
