Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has broken his silence on the selection inclusion of attacking duo Relebohile Mofokeng and Elias Mokwana for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations later this month.
On Monday, the Belgian tactician named his final 25-man squad to do duty at the continental showpiece in Morocco, keeping the core of his players from the 2023 AFCON side as well as those who played a key role in their AFCON and 2026 World Cup qualifying campaigns.
Mofokeng had in the past few weeks been sidelined with injury but made a strong comeback by aiding Orlando Pirates into the Carling Knockout Cup final as well as shooting them to the summit of the Betway Premiership.
Mokwana on the other hand had fallen out of favour at Esperance De Tunis despite making a huge impact where he won silverware in his first few months at the North African club. His loan move to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hazem saw him regain his old form and consequently forcing his way into Broos’ team.
“In the past months, we looked at several games of Elias in Al-Hazem and he was playing very good even though he didn’t play really on his position,” said Broos.
“They use him as a striker, as a central striker. But that means also for us that if we should need someone there, that we always can use Elias.
“At the other way, he’s in very good shape and I like wingers who are very quick, I like wingers who have action and I think Elias is someone like that.
“About Relebohile, I like him as a player. He’s a very good player, he’s a very talented player. Had a few problems now in the past week with an injury, so I was very happy to see him play again with Pirates, and that’s why I didn’t doubt one second to take him with the selection.”
