Sekhukhune United striker Bradley Grobler has reacted to Bafana Bafana’s exit from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The 37-year-old veteran forward was one of the inform players who were not picked for the AFCON. Grobler and Thembinkosi Lorch are two names fans called for to be selected for the Bafana Bafana’s AFCON squad.
With only 13 national caps to his name, the ex-SuperSport United star has not given up playing for his country.
Grobler positive with Bafana’s AFCON showing
“Yesterday’s (Sunday) game, I thought it was one of the better games we played in the tournament, to be fair,” Grobler told KickOff.
“We started the first half very well, I think we were on top of them, obviously their goal came against the run of play, and obviously changed the complexion of the game.
“Sometimes that’s football, you can play not so well and still win games, as we did in the group stages. Unfortunately, sometimes when you get that first goal when you’re playing so well, it becomes really difficult. And that’s exactly what happened.”
Against Cameroon, Bafana dominated the early stages of the match but failed to take their chances. Two misses proved costly as the Indomitable Lions scored twice in each half to reach the last eight.
Grobler felt Bafana should have made more attempts after conceding instead of keeping the ball long.
“We were pretty good upfront, we created a lot of chances early on, but at times we hung onto the ball too long, where we should be looking to take a shot or getting the ball into the box,” he said.
“You look into the last five minutes of the game, we kind of went with a route one approach, and we got ourselves a goal. I mean, the Cameroonian keeper looked a bit more dodgy for them, unfortunately, in football, sometimes you got to make the game ugly to get a result. The last few minutes we did that, and it looked like we could get another goal.”
Grobler has not played for Bafana in over seven years and it remains to be seen if he will ever get recalled.
