Benni’s Technical Team Surprised By Change Of Opponents

Posted on November 20, 2025

Benni McCarthy and his technical team were left baffled after learning of Kenya’s opponents during the recent international break before their 8-0 hammering by Senegal.

The 8-0 defeat for Kenya shocked many football supporters as the Teranga Lions raced to a six-goal first-half lead. With Kenya not qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup nor the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, some fans were left surprised by the strong choice of opponents.

And Harambee Stars assistant Vasili Manousakis explained that the technical team were also caught by surprise as they were discussing two fixtures against Comoros and Madagascar but then they were given Equatorial Guinea and later Senegal was included.

“It was a nice surprise for us,” Manousakis had told media before the 8-0 defeat against Senegal.

“We don’t know how, or who agreed to the fixture, but we were discussing playing Comoros and Madagascar.

“I think things changed with the tournament guys hosting the tournament that side and then we got Equatorial Guinea a little bit later and then Senegal was added.

“So, I think two fixtures were key for us, we wanted to play two games in this window to give everybody a chance.

“We don’t know quite how it’s happened, but it has happened…”
