Kenya national team coach Benni McCarthy was voted Coach of the Month for August by the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) following Harambee Stars’ impressive run at the recently concluded CHAN tournament.
Harambee Stars topped Group A with 10 points having beaten eventual tournament winners Morocco in the pool, before repeating that with former champions DR Congo and Zambia while drawing with Angola en route the historic knockout phase at the tournament. They were eliminated from the competition for African-based players co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania in the quarters through a penalty shootout by finalists Madagascar.
The former Bafana Bafana striker beat off competition from Rugby 7s side Strathmore Leos coach William Ojal, national volleyball team coach Geoffrey Omondi, women’s U20 volleyball coach Jackline Basara and St Peter’s Boys High coach Nelson Jaika for the monthly award.
