Former Manchester United striker’s coach, Benni McCarthy has admitted he dreams of becoming the head coach at Old Trafford and would also like to coach Kaizer Chiefs one day.
McCarthy, 48, is currently in South Africa to launch his new book BENNI, written by legendary journalist Mark Gleeson.
The former Cape Town City and AmaZulu coach is currently in charge of the Kenya men’s national team, who will face Estonia in the FIFA World Series in the upcoming international break.
During a Q&A at launch for his book in Cape Town, McCarthy was asked which two clubs he would like to coach in future – and his answer was clear.
“I was a first team coach, I’m giving myself a little bit of time,” he replied.
“Maybe in five to 10 years, I want to be the head coach of Man United.
“And in South Africa, I’ve always been a Kaizer Chiefs supporter, I want to coach the two clubs that grew up supporting.
“So Man United and Kaizer Chiefs.”
McCarthy finished his playing career at Orlando Pirates, and his name has continuously come up when positions at SA’s big three clubs, Chiefs, Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns become vacant.
He coached Cape Town City between 2017 and 2019, winning one MTN8 title, before rescuing AmaZulu from relegation and guiding them into the CAF Champions League. He was named PSL Coach of the Season in the 2020/21 campaign.
His book, BENNI is available at Exclusive Books for R370, and it tells the story of McCarthy’s playing career, from growing up in the Cape Flats to becoming the only South African footballer to lift the UEFA Champions League. His former Porto coach Jose Mourinho has written the forward and stated: “He had everything a coach loved in a player”.
