Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has given insight on defender Thabo Moloisane’s future and also applauded him for his performances despite his future hanging in the balance.
Moloisane is in his third Stellies season after joining the side in 2023/24 following Maritzburg United’s (now, Durban City) relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship. The 26-year-old has made name for himself in the Maroon and White after helping the side to win their first major trophy, the Carling Knockout Cup.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns defender is in his last season at Stellenbosch with his current contract set to expire in June 2026 and Barker has confirmed that they are working on finding a solution to be able to keep the defender at the club beyond June 2026.
“I think it’s more down to them as a character and the person they are. Thabo is in his last year, but I think it’s not like he wants to be leaving, he actually would like to continue. So, I think it’s something that we are working on, ” Barker told the media.
“But I think of him as a person, as a character, I just have respect for a player that might be leaving and still putting in the shifts that he has he’s played in every single game, every single minute.
“He deserves it, for me, he should have been the defender of the season last year. I felt he was a bit unlucky not to get that. But again, he’s shown his quality this evening. So yeah, well done to him.”
Moloisane has played 85 games so far for Stellies and scored four goals.
