Barker Makes Bullish Statement About Stellies’ Prospects This Season

Posted on September 21, 2025

Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker has made a bullish statement about the club’s prospects for the 2025/26 season.

The Cape Winelands side has endured a poor start to the season in the Betway Premiership, with a record of one win, one draw, and five losses in their first six games.

With only four points accumulated, Stellenbosch are currently 13th in the league standings, a far cry from where they expect to be.

In spite of a slow start in the league, they recently missed out on a trophy, falling to Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 final at Mbombela Stadium last weekend.

Following their third consecutive loss—a 2-1 defeat to AmaZulu on Wednesday—coach Steve Barker remained confident, asserting that the team will soon find its form and become a “good team” again over time.

He stated that they would make a deep run in the CAF Confederation Cup and have a strong showing in the league.

“I can guarantee, you will rewrite these words what I told you today, this team will turn out to be a very good team over the course of the season,” said Barker.

“We will hit the right sort of form that we need to do at the right time. Again, we will go far in the Confederation Cup and will turn our league form around. It will be another successful season.”

Their losing streak stretched to over four matches as they succumbed to a shock 1-0 loss to Richards Bay on Saturday at the Danie Craven Stadium.
