Bafana Thump Lesotho, Edge Closer to 2026 World Cup

Bafana Bafana defeated Lesotho with a decisive 3-0 victory in their FIFA World Cup qualifying match at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Friday.

Mohau Nkota, Lyle Foster, and Oswin Appollis all scored, ensuring South Africa secured all three points.

Hugo Broos’ team was youthful, with young players like Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Thalente Mbatha, and Mohau Nkota getting starts. Meanwhile, Teboho Mokoena was in the starting lineup despite Lesotho’s protest threat.

An early injury to Nyiko Mobbie forced Bafana into an early change, with Mamelodi Sundowns right-back Zuko Mdunyelwa coming on as his replacement.

There was a distinct lack of opportunities in the first ten minutes with both sides cautiously feeling each other out.

Likuena were caught off guard in the 16th minute as Aubrey Modiba’s cross found Mohau Nkota, who neatly slotted it in to give Bafana the lead. Thereafter, South Africa started to have even more exciting moments up-front, seeking a second goal.

Ronwen Williams had little to do in goal as Lesotho struggled to find their way back into the game, unable to dismantle Broos’ well-organised side or create any scoring opportunities. Jane Thabantso had a chance to level the score for Lesotho, but he shot his effort over the bar.

The first half ended with Bafana leading 1-0.

Bafana picked up where they left off in the second half, dominating possession and creating chances as they searched for a second goal. Bafana suffered a second injury setback when Thabo Moloisane was replaced by Khulumani Ndamane

A second goal for South Africa came in the 64th minute when Lyle Foster was quick to react after the goalkeeper parried away a thunderous shot from Aubrey Modiba, rattling the back of the net from the rebound.

The scoring continued just four minutes later when Foster set up Oswin Appollis to extend the lead to three goals.

In the 73rd minute, Broos took off Sipho Mbule, Foster and Nkota, introducing Bathusi Aubaas, Iqraam Raynaers and Kamogelo Sebelebele.

Lesotho made a few attempts to get a goal back, but Bafana’s defence held firm.

As the quest for a FIFA World Cup spot continues, Bafana will face the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Tuesday, 9 September at the same venue.
