Pitso Mosimane has weighed in on the Betway Premiership title race, discussing Orlando Pirates’ chances of ending Mamelodi Sundowns’ eight-season league dominance.
Under Abdeslam Ouaddou’s leadership, the Buccaneers have already secured two trophies — the MTN8 and the Carling Knockout Cup.
With one game in hand, Pirates currently sit top of the league with 28 points from 26 matches, holding a two-point lead over second-placed Sundowns.
Mosimane believes the league title is in Pirates’ hands but cautioned that “May is still far.”
“It’s in their hands, it’s for them to lose it,” said Mosimane in the interview with Robert Marawa on MSW.
“But you need to be consistent because three points or five points [gap]…you know the story; I’ve always said that ‘May is too far’.
“I’ve had people ahead of me with nine points but it’s about the consistency. Look at the Premier League, Man City are sniffing now, they say we know how to win this thing, if Arsenal slip, we’re here and Aston Villa want to do ‘Leicester’.
“Anything can happen in football. Mamelodi Sundowns know how to win consistently. Don’t forget that.”
When asked whether Pirates’ elimination from the CAF Champions League gives them an advantage, with Sundowns still involved and facing a busy schedule, Mosimane said, “Yes and no. Yes, because they now have only one job, which is to win the league.”
“No, in a sense that, do they have experience, mentality because you need experience to stay there. Can they take the pressure?
“One draw can give Sundowns the opportunity to win one match and then now this thing changes.”
