Are Orlando Pirates handing the league title to Sundowns?

Posted on January 28, 2026

Orlando Pirates seem to be playing a supporting role for Mamelodi Sundowns this season.

This comes after the Brazilians narrowly defeated a resilient Sekhukhune United on Tuesday evening, securing all three points and extending their lead to three points in the Betway Premier League.

It took two late goals for Masandawana to overcome Babina Noko, but their supporters will gladly celebrate the win as they shift their focus to the CAF Champions League.

Meanwhile, Pirates, who are not in action this midweek, were hoping for Sundowns to drop points. With two matches in hand, the Buccaneers still have the opportunity to catch up and surpass their rivals.

A win against Magesi on Saturday would see them level on points with Sundowns, but they would remain in second place unless they score four or more goals. Any loss or draw would put them at a disadvantage and give the upper hand to Miguel Cardoso’s men.

Are the Pirates surrendering the league to Sundowns?

The Buccaneers began the 2024/25 season impressively, winning their first seven matches and topping the league table.

It seemed that the Sea Robbers were on track to secure their first league title in 13 years. However, a midseason slump saw them drop crucial points.

They had games in hand that could have allowed them to challenge the Brazilians, but they continuously lost and drew important matches. At one point, they were two points clear of Sundowns during the AFCON break.

With Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs both winning their matches last week, the Buccaneers needed to beat Sekhukhune to maintain their lead, but their inability to score left them level on points with Sundowns.

Sundowns seem to hold a psychological advantage over Pirates, which could worsen if the Buccaneers fail to secure a victory against Magesi on Saturday.

Cardoso’s men recently defeated Babina Noko, only days after playing the Buccaneers to a goalless draw.

Pirates host Magesi at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday evening.
