AmaZulu FC goalkeeper Darren Johnson has opened up on his bold Bafana Bafana ambitions.
The 28-year-old made the move to Usuthu at the start of the season, joining on a free transfer after leaving Chippa United following the conclusion of the previous campaign.
Since arriving, he’s been a regular in goal, making 12 appearances and securing seven clean sheets across all competitions.
Johnson says he wants to establish himself as a consistent starter for AmaZulu, but he also has his sights set on becoming Bafana Bafana’s number one goalkeeper.
“Short-term goals, I’d like to get into the Bafana squad, and to cement my place as AmaZulu number one and to get as much as possible,” said Johnson.
“Long-term, I’d possibly like to make a big transfer. I wouldn’t state which team. I’d like to be Bafana number one and in a big team as well.”
Having been part of some previous preliminary squads, Johnson is confident that if he keeps performing well, everything will eventually fall into place.
“It’s always an honour when I see my name in the squad called up by coach Hugo Broos. I think it’s a reflection of the hard work that l’ve also put in from the start of the season,” he added.
“I think that previously, people have been doubting me and my qualities. I’m thankful to God for the opportunity he’s given me now at AmaZulu to show what l’m capable of.
“And most importantly, if I continue to do well, everything else will fall into place. At the moment, I have to do my best at AmaZulu.”
