Amajita registered a 5-0 record victory over New Caledonia in their second Under-20 FIFA World Cup group match.
This is their biggest win ever and only the second they have ever recorded at this tournament, the other being a 2−0 score against Honduras in 2009.
Siviwe Magidigidi scored a brace, while Siviwe Nkwali, Shakeel April and Lazola Maku netted one each, securing the victory that now sees South Africa third in the group with three points.
Raymond Mdaka made two changes to the starting line-up from the last match, bringing in Mfundo Vilakazi and Magidigidi to replace Kutlwano Letlhaku and Jody Ah Shene.
In the opening exchanges, South Africa enjoyed more possession as Caledonia kept sending long balls forward that repeatedly proved ineffective.
Mdaka’s troops nearly opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Magidigidi’s cross deflected off a defender and struck the crossbar.
Amajita broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when Nkwali headed in Langelihle Phili’s cross for the much-needed breakthrough goal.
They doubled their lead in the 34th minute when April converted a penalty. The spot-kick was awarded after Magidigidi was brought down inside the box.
Magidigidi added the third one just two minutes before half-time, with the AFCON champions going to the break leading 3-0.
In the second half stanza, South Africa picked up right where they left off, continuing to dominate possession and test the opposition goalkeeper, Noa Muller.
Magidigidi netted his second goal of the game in the 52nd minute, finishing off a brilliant set-up from Mfundo Vilakazi, who registered his second assist of the match.
South Africa persisted in their offensive effort, aiming to secure more goals and thereby improve their goal difference tally.
In the 80th minute, Maku unleashed a delightful strike from outside the box, hitting the net to extend the lead to five to zero.
Mdaka’s men stayed in third place in Group E, level on three points with France, who had earlier lost 3-0 to USA, based on the points from games against each as the tie breaker. However, Amajita moved into the top spot of the best third-placed teams.
Amajita will play their next match against the USA on Sunday, 5 October at 10 pm at the Estadio El Teniente.
