Orlando Pirates took a massive gamble on Sipho Mbule at the beginning of the season.
Mbule joined Mamelodi Sundowns in a high-profile transfer back in 2022. The midfield maestro was tipped for big things at the Brazilians however it wasn’t to be for him.
In fact, his struggles at the club took him many steps back in his career. He was eventually loaned out to Sekhukhune United for a season in 2022 where he showed some glimpses of what he’s capable of.
But even at Sekhukhune, the spark just wasn’t consistently there. After being released by Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of last season, Orlando Pirates took the brave decision of snapping the 27-year-old up on a free transfer.
Orlando Pirates in talks with Mbule over extension
Fast forward five months later and Mbule is looking like his very old self again. The midfielder is back in the Bafana Bafana fold and has featured in 14 matches for Orlando Pirates this season.
With his contract in Mayfair coming to an end at the close of the season, his agent has since confirmed that the Buccaneers are already in talks with Mbule over triggering the extension clause they hold!
“Pirates have an existing option that aligns with Sipho’s contract, and discussions around that are ongoing,” Mike Makaab told KickOff.
“If everything goes according to plan, I foresee Orlando Pirates exercising that option. But, as with any footballer, it ultimately depends on consistent performance.”
Makaab went on to further stress that Mbule is well aware he needs to give his best for the team for the remainder of the season. The veteran agent is confident Sipho Mbule will do enough to impress the club’s hierarchy.
Mbule’s numbers in the PSL
The silky midfielder has made 183 appearances in South Africa. He also has 16 goals and 14 assists to his name.
While he’s yet to score or assist for Orlando Pirates, it’s likely only a matter of time. The midfielder will also be hoping to make an impact at the upcoming Afcon tournament in Morocco for Bafana Bafana.
He’ll be hoping to use the remainder of the season to book his place at next year’s Fifa World Cup with Hugo Broos.
