The 29-year-old Chaine has been one of the most consistent performers in the Betway Premiership, keeping 16 clean sheets in 24 matches. It’s the kind of form that doesn’t just help your club, it starts forcing national team conversations, especially when you’re arguably the best in your position.
Chaine’s recent omission from the Bafana squad for the friendly against Panama raised a few eyebrows, but former goalkeeper Thabang Stemmer believes there’s no long-term concern.
SIPHO CHAINE’S FORM TOO STRONG TO IGNORE
Stemmer feels the decision was more about squad building than anything else, with Broos looking to expand his options in goal.
“Sipho Chaine will definitely be part of the World Cup squad. The recent omission from the match against Panama was a strategic decision by Hugo Broos to build a pool of goalkeepers,” Stemmer told KickOff.
But beyond that explanation, the numbers are doing most of the talking. Sixteen clean sheets in 24 games puts Chaine right at the top of the pile in the PSL this season.
According to Stemmer, it’s not just about shot-stopping either, it’s the full package.
“He’s among the top three goalkeepers in the country, and his record speaks volumes. He’s a vital player for Pirates, starting attacks and organising the defence. His consistency makes him indispensable,” he said.
BAFANA BAFANA DECISION LOOMING
What also stands out about Chaine, according to Stemmer, is how simple he keeps his game — something that often separates good goalkeepers from great ones.
“If you analyse his game, you’ll see he rarely makes mistakes because he keeps things simple. He is trustworthy and reliable,” Stemmer added.
With his current form, the calls for inclusion are only going to get louder. “I am convinced Broos will include Chaine in the squad. Dropping him would be a mistake, especially considering he’s arguably Pirates’ best player this season.
“No other goalkeeper in the league is performing better. He’s clearly on track to win Goalkeeper of the Year and should be a key figure at the World Cup,” he concluded.
For now, the ball is in Broos’ court, but if form counts, Chaine is making the decision harder to ignore with every match.
