As things stand, Kaizer Chiefs have no players in the Bafana Bafana men’s national team. However, that could change.
Coach Hugo Broos has hinted at one Amakhosi star whom he considered selecting.
Not only that, but he stated that this Kaizer Chiefs star could potentially play a more permanent role in the squad when current Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams and first-choice goalkeepers hangs up his gloves.
KAIZER CHIEFS GOALKEEPER EARMARKED FOR BAFANA FUTURE
Kaizer Chiefs captain and goalkeeper Brandon Petersen almost made it into the recent national squad.
In fact, Broos admitted that he was considering selecting the Amakhosi captain in his most recent 23-man Bafana Bafana squad to face Panama in two international friendlies.
“So, I thought I could take him (Brandon Peterson) now, but he is injured. But it’s good that you have people to back up those guys who are always there. One day, we shall have to replace them,” Broos stated as per KickOff.
So, it appears to be a case of so close yet so far for the Kaizer Chiefs skipper.
Broos is looking at 31-year-old Petersen as a potential long-term replacement for 34-year-old Williams when the Bafana Bafana captain decides to call it a day.
“Ronwen (Williams) cannot play until he is 40. So, we have to look for the future. Maybe those guys like Leaner or Petersen will be Bafana Bafana goalkeepers in future,” Broos concluded.
AMAKHOSI MAY HAVE NO PLAYERS AT FIFA WORLD CUP 2026
Kaizer Chiefs look set to have no players at FIFA World Cup 2026 which kicks off in 73 days on 11 June.
As mentioned, no current players made it into the most recent national team which has been a recurring theme for the Soweto giants for the past few seasons now.
Given the current form of their players and the available talent in the Bafana Bafana squad, this is unlikely to change with FIFA World Cup 2026 rapidly approaching.
Petersen may have the best chance of making the squad, given the fact that Broos recently mentioned considering selecting the Kaizer Chiefs captain in goal.
However, his selection is unlikely given the fact that Sipho Chaine missed the squad due to disciplinary issues. The Orlando Pirates shot-stopper is in better form at present as well.
Therefore, he is more likely to go to the FIFA World Cup than Petersen.
Squads named
Broos in early March named a 38-man preliminary squad to prepare for FIFA World Cup 2026 – which contained no Kaizer Chiefs players.
The squad did have five goalkeepers: Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns), Ricardo Goss (Siwelele FC), Sipho Chaine (Orlando Pirates), Renaldo Leaner (Sekhukhune United) and Darren Johnson (AmaZulu FC).
Broos then named a 23-player squad to take on Panama – which included three goalkeepers.
They were Williams, Goss and Leaner.
Once again no Amakhosi players made the cut.
