Kaizer Chiefs improved midfielder undergoes surgery – Report

Posted on January 13, 2026

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Sibongiseni “Ox” Mthethwa could be out until March, according to reports.

The 31-year-old has suffered a new injury, which could keep him out of action for at least seven or eight weeks.

Mthethwa has been one of the best players for Kaizer Chiefs this season, winning numerous midfield battles. After a frustrating 2024/25 season, Ox has looked sharp under Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze.

This week, Soccer Laduma reported that the Kaizer Chiefs midfielder underwent surgery.

“You see now he has done an operation. He did it in December. You remember the time when Chiefs were not playing? He did a knee operation,” a source told Soccer Laduma.

“He is not even training with the team right now. It’s an old injury. And you see it has happened at the wrong time because his contract with Chiefs is coming to an end this year. What is he going to do? Now it’s obvious Chiefs can only renew it with one year and if he doesn’t play they can as well not renew it. Then what will he say? He did an operation.”

The insider told Soccer Laduma that Mthethwa was expected to start his rehab in February after undergoing surgery.

“Then maybe return to full fitness in March. The contract is coming to an end in June, and we are going to the World Cup. I have seen people saying almost every player at Chiefs is back at training except Ox. It’s because he did the operation.”

Kaizer Chiefs have not released any statement regarding the injury of their midfielder.

Amakhosi are next in action on Tuesday (20 January) against Lamontville Golden Arrows in a Betway Premiership clash.

How good has the Ox been for Chiefs this season?
