1 change, 2 positional shifts in Bafana Bafana’s expected 11 vs Cameroon

Posted on January 3, 2026

South Africa’s Bafana Bafana will take on Cameroon in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) round of 16.

The game is set for Sunday, at 20:00 from the Al Medina Stadium, in Rabat.

Fans across South Africa can catch all the action live on SABC 2.

HUGO BROOS EXPECTED TO SHIFT AWAY FROM DEFENSIVE APPROACH

Broos is expected to move away from the overly defensive approach he employed in the first three matches, especially against Egypt, where South Africa had the talent to win instead of the 1-0 loss.

Though he might still manage the game at the right time once Bafana Bafana get ahead against Cameroon.

A defensive Sphephelo Sithole will likely drop to the bench for Relebohile Mofokeng, who will take the attacking midfield role.

That means Sipho Mbule moves from the number 10 role to central midfield. Teboho Mokoena will then vacate the central midfield and move into Sithole’s defensive midfield position.

So basically, one change and two positional shift, but Broos will count on this tweak to add attacking bite without losing balance.

The round of 16 simply spells winner-takes-all, unlike the group stage where you play for points. Broos is expected to move away from the overly defensive approach.

BAFANA BAFANA’S EXPECTED STARTING 11 VS CAMEROON

Goalkeeper: Ronwen Williams
Right-back: Khuliso Mudau
Centre-backs: Siyabonga Ngezana & Mbekezeli Mbokazi
Left-back: Aubrey Modiba
Defensive midfield: Teboho Mokoena
Central midfield: Sipho Mbule
Attacking midfield: Relebohile Mofokeng
Right wing: Tsepang Moremi
Left wing: Oswin Appollis
Striker: Lyle Foster.

Bench players to watch: Bathusi Aubaas or Sithole could be key if Broos wants to control the game later.

South Africa has the upper hand historically against Cameroon: three wins, five draws, and just one loss in nine meetings.

In competitive matches, Bafana have never lost to the Indomitable Lions, including that famous 3-0 win at AFCON 1996, a tournament South Africa went on to lift.
